Q. Can you find this gazing ball?  (June 4, 2008)
A. The Curiosity Garden

The first 25 members who responded and correctly identified where the gazing ball is located in the Children’s Garden were entered into the drawing.

Our winner: Jean Cooper from Lombard and a member of The Morton Arboretum since 2002. Jean attended the June summer concert featuring 12-time Grammy Award winner Emmylou Harris as our guest. We received 53 postings; 34 were correct. We selected Jean at random from the first 25 correct responses. In addition to four tickets to the concert, Jean received a bottle of wine and our Arboretum signature logo blanket.

Q. Can you identify this body of water adjacent to the Arboretum concert grounds? (June 11, 2008)
A. Firefly Pond

The first 10 members who responded and correctly identified Firefly Pond were entered into the drawing. This was a tough one! The name of the pond does not appear on many Arboretum maps. We encouraged you to ask one of our friendly and helpful staff.

Our winner: Ann Galezio from Glen Ellyn and a member of The Morton Arboretum since 1995. Ann and three friends attended the Paula Cole concert and Ann received a bottle of Bonterra wine and our Arboretum signature logo picnic blanket with our compliments. She was selected at random from the correct responses.

Q. Can you name this wetland? (June 19, 2008)
A. Bur Reed Marsh on the West side of the Arboretum.

Not a pond. Not a lake. Not a swamp. In spring, early summer and after heavy rains, Bur Reed Marsh teems with life. A viewing platform, attached to the boardwalk, encourages you to pause, observe, watch birds, listen to red-winged blackbirds squawk, and watch dragonflies dart and dash.
The first 50 members who responded and correctly identified the wetland with its full name were entered into the drawing.
Our winner: Annette Smith from Naperville and an Arboretum member since 1994. Annette is a runner and comes to the Arboretum every Tuesday to run with friends.  She says, “We love hearing the frogs croaking at Bur Reed Marsh!” We received a total of 75 entries of which 62 were correct. Annette and three lucky friends were able to attend the sold-out Chris Issak in August at our final summer twilight concert and to enjoy a bottle of wine and our Arboretum signature logo blanket.

Q: Can you identify this model of stream restoration? (August 28, 2008)
A: Willoway Brook
More than 270 fans of this perfectly wonderful spot on the Arboretum’s west side got this one right! We entered all the correct respondent names into our random drawing.
Our winner: John McDonnell – a member since 2004 –  who lives in Darien. Jack received 6 FREE tickets for the Arboretum’s 13th annual Trick or Trees Halloween event held in October, a bottle of wine, one of our sought-after logo signature picnic blankets and one or our new eco-tote bags!

Winner must be a current, active Morton Arboretum member and over 21 to enter and win. The decision of the tree talk judges is final.

Just a correction to “Q. Can you name this wetland? (June 19, 2008)”. Your answer says that Bur Reed Marsh is on the West Side in which it really is on the East Side.

Oops, Don, you caught me! You’re absolutely correct. Bur Reed Marsh is on the east side of the Arboretum. – KLJ
