Winner for ‘Tell us about this special tree’

The winner for this contest is Jeanne Riegel. Jeanne correctly identified the Gingko Biloba as the beautiful trees whose leaves are so golden in the photo we posted.

The Gingko enjoys the distinction of being the only surviving species of its family. It is incredibly robust, resisting damage from cold, wind, pests and disease. These trees can live for thousands of years (some specimens in China are more than 2,500 years old!), reach impressive sizes, have unique fan-shaped leaves and display breathtaking fall color. Joy Morton, founder of The Morton Arboretum, was particularly fond of this tree for its enduring beauty and longevity.

j.ReigelJeanne won one of our Arboretum signature logo blankets and a 62-inch logo umbrella - a $100 value! Here’s what she had to say when she learned she’d won:

” WOW! I don’t usually win things. This is tree-mendous! I love the Arboretum and have spent many hours exploring the photographic splendor of this supreme arboreal place. I have even brought friends to the Arboretum for their own photographic challenges and they, too, have fallen in love with it and even purchased memberships.
“I have contributed many photos to the Arboretum’s flickr site. I enjoy trying to find the more intimate parts of the photographic landscape to shoot-details, small flowers, contrasting images-things like that. I hope others will seek these images, too.
“I’ve really needed an umbrella in particular for a long time. And a nice new blanket in time for the winter’s chill sounds so cozy and warm. I’ll have to get out the hot cocoa!”

They’re the beautiful fan-shaped leaves of the Ginko Biloba tree. The trees have different sexes on separate trees. The males are better because they do not drop the foul-smelling fruits. 86. Diane Felt Says:

This is the lovely Gingko Biloba tree. The day of my mother’s funeral, our 15 & 12 year old children were so sad. The funeral director gave them a lesson in the life cycle by selecting a number of fallen Gingko leaves from the funeral home’s lawn. While these leaves seemed to be finished with their time as thriving leaves on the Gingko tree above, he showed them otherwise. Gripping the stem of the first leaf between his fingers, he began to add one leaf after another until it transformed into something even more beautiful. He tied the leaves stems together and presented the golden bouquet to our children.

  87. MaryAnne Lustig Says:

    It’s a Gingko Biloba tree.

  98. Sabine Charles Says:

The Gingko biloba tree, we have the female variety in our front yard and it carries golden fruit that when stepped on releases a putrid smell. My daughter, 5, told me (just the other day after walking by the tree on the sidewalk that was covered with “stepped on fruit”): “Mommy, we have to go back inside, you have to change Noah’s (17 mths) diaper.”

  99. Jim Leichti Says:

    It’s a gingko tree.

  100. joan d. Says:

This beautiful tree, gingko biloba, is one of the oldest still living on earth. Its lobed leaves are green during spring and summer. They become a golden yellow in fall, usually dropping all in one day.

Also, if it were something else, would the Gingko shop still be called that?

  117. B. Walker Says:

    Gingko

  118. kjaros Says:

To Keith and and Everyone Else,

Don’t forget: the selection of a Destinations contest winner is random – from all correct entries. I suppose if someone doesn’t know the correct answer, having more than 100 entries with more or less the same response does tip the scales!

But the purpose of Destinations is to encourage participation – and the submissions this time, in particular, are wonderful. I’ve enjoyed reading through what members are saying about their trees. In fact, I had no idea that the Ginkgo was so popular in home landscapes!

  123. Margaret Kloet Says:
