I have these holes in my trees they are 1/16 or an 1/8 inch in dia. almost like someone drilled the holes. These holes are scattered thoughout the trees. Example, they start mostly over a 5′ from the ground. Some holes are in a group others may be one hole or a couple holes. I don’t see any bugs but last season there were some odd looking bugs in the trees and I didn’t think anything of it. Now before we go any further, I’ve got no idea what type of tree they are! The city of Chicago planted them. Any help will be much appreciated.
Thank You,
I am going to use a corn gluten based weed killer. I’m supposed to apply when the forsythia or daffodils start to bloom. Can anyone out there let me know when they are blooming?
Thanks,

How high up the trunk do you trim? And, is there a general rule for thinning?

Hi

I’m looking for a native Carex that would perform well as a groundcover in urban situation in Chicago. Hoping that the Carex would be good spreader and suppress weeds and that it would be attractive for most of the year. Conditions vary from sunny to partly shaded. Soil is average for Chicago area (not sandy), not too dry, not too wet. At the Morton Arb I saw a Carex being used adjacent to the walkway leading from parking lot to main entrance. (Not in bioswale.) I thought it was labelled as Carex sprengelii, but when I looked up this species on line, it looked rather different. Could you let me know: a) if this is the Carex that is out there; b) if so, has it performed well as groundcover; and c) if there are other Carex that have worked well as groundcover in conditions described above?

Many thanks! Karen

I’d like to start a local tree identification program. How can labels be safely attached to trees, and how can I convince my local city forester that this is a safe practice? Suggestions on inexpensive ways to fabricate permanent labels? Thanks for any comments or advice!

I have two long needle pine trees. I noticed a white growth(?) which looks like powder on an small area of one tree two summers back. Now it covers much of both trees. What could it be? Should something be done? I’m looking for any help available.
Thanks in advance.
