Correct name for trees that look like ferns

Hi, Can someone please tell me the correct name of the trees with leaves that look like ferns? In the fall some of them drop seed pods that are about 4 to 6 inches long. Also, can I grow one of these trees from those pods?

  1. Chris Mest Says:

Trees with seed pods like you are describing sound like legumes. The longest seed pods are Locusts but there are also Kentucky Coffee Trees. One of these might be what you are talking about. Other legumes are Redbuds, Yellowwoods and Mimosa. They are related to clover, peas, peanuts, lupins, etc. They all fix nitrogen.

  2. Plant Clinic Says:

I agree with Chris. You probably have some kind of legume, maybe a honeylocust. If you have any digital photos of the tree’s leaves, you can send them to the Plant Clinic at the Morton Arboretum via email. The email address is plantclinic@mortonarb.org. We’ll see if we can identify it for you.
