I have a large old Elm (American Elm I presume) that has been in the process of dying for a number of years. Is it possible to confirm the cause by visual inspection, or is a lab test required to differentiat the cause. I suspect it is either Dutch Elm or Verticillium Wilt. If it is the latter, is that something that could spread to other trees in the area?
Your reply would be appreciated.

Dutch Elm disease can usually be diagnosed by visual inspection. It can be confirmed by lab test but someone has to climb the tree and take the sample.
Verticillium is soil borne. You can obtain a list of susceptible plants and just avoid planting them in the same place.
