Hello,
We have several Fremont Maple trees that are becoming infested with orange balls on the leaves. Millions of them enough to change the color of the leaves from green to orange.
I asked in care of tree’s service and they did not have any information on this and did not know how to help it except to say it looks like the after effects of a spide mite or bug like a shell of an egg.
Please help as I could not find any information on this on the internet. This is happening in Zone 5A – Barrington, IL
Please see the pictures below if you would like to see a sample [paste into browser]:

Please help as it happening on the Maple strain in this area.
Any information on what this actually is and what can be done. I am noticing that it is taking some of the nourishment from the tree as the leaf groups drop as no longer able to get a flow.
Thank you.

Michael, I looked at the photos you referenced and these are Maple bladder galls. They are caused by mites which live, feed and mate inside the galls all summer. They don’t cause permanent damage and usually don’t affect the health of the tree. They do detract from the beauty of the tree. I have them on my Maple tree but there is not much you can or should do to control them.
