Lilac Tree Fungus, or lichen

Found one branch or several lilac trees in my side yard with a realy strange fungus or lichen. Goes from the base of the brach to the very to, only on the south side of the branch, white, and rather beautiful. Concern it is harmful and could spread to others. Have a yard with many old beautiful trees and bushes do not want to leave unattended if it should spread or be dangerous.

If it is lichen it is harmless. Having lichen on your trees is an indication that you have clean air; it will not grow on trees where there is air pollution.
Since you “have a yard with many old beautiful tree and bushes” I recommend having them checked annually by a certified arborist.

If you have a digital camera you could send a picture to the Plant Clinic at the Morton Arboretum. With a visual we might be able to verify what you have. You can email a photo to the Plant Clinic at plantclinic@mortonarb.org

Hi, Plant Clinic! When people send you photos, can you post them for all of us to see? It would be very educational to see the photos along with your explanation. Thanks!
