Our Birch Tree

We had this white bark birch for about 23 years. One day recently we noticed a pinkish discoloration running from the root up and up and up on one side of the trunk. It seems to have appeared almost overnight.

We asked our “lawn-man” about it and he said he has never seen anything like it. We don’t know if it is a disease or bug that could spread to other trees in the area. Is the tree dying?

We will be watching for your answer. Thank you.

  1. Chris Mest Says:

I’m not sure about the discoloration. That is something I would have to see. The white bark Birches have a common insect problem in the bronze Birch borer. This can kill the tree if the infestation gets bad enough. You would see dieback of parts of the canopy and exit holes. This is usually treated with a direct trunk injection. Consult with a certified arborist.

This does not sound like a borer problem. Are there dead branches or do you see small D-shaped holes in the trunk? It could also be a canker or a fungal disease called wetwood.

If you could email a photo to: plantclinic@mortonarb.org we’ll be glad to take a look.
