I have a number of 12 year old riverbirch in which a deep red fungal growth has just appeared on the leaves over the past week or so. The tree in general is in good health and leaves all look good except for the fungus. These are located in southeast michigan.  Any idea on what this might be… haven’t seen this before.
Thank you.

I have a River Birch tree that is over 12 years old and in the past week, the leaves have a RED egg like patches on half of all the leaves. I am concerned as it looks like it is killing the leaves.

The tree does have a ‘smell’ to it like cat urine. I know this is NOT normal.

    What should we do?

I just noticed what appears to be a reddish fungus on the leaves of my river birch. Some of the leaves have small patched of it and other leaves have much of the leaf covered. I am also located in southeast michigan and do not know what it is or how to treat it. i plan to take a few of the leaves to a nursery/greenhouse to see what they recommend. Does anyone know what this might be and how to treat it?

    Can you post photos?

I’ve got in too, SE michigan as well. Let us all know what you find out. Mine is on lower branches only so far. Sprayed with Rose fungicide (what I had in the chemical cabinet).

  5. Chris Mest Says:

Would you describe it as velvety or fuzzy. I think what you have is in the photo you can see by going to this link

If this is it then it is a gall which makes the leaves look weird but does no real harm.

Has anyone from the Morton responded to this?? I am in a northern suburb of Chicago and have magenta spots on the leaves of my river birch. The leaves appear healthy otherwise but these spots are rather disconcerting.

I have a reddish fungus on my river birch. I live in up state New York. I was wondering if there was any spray that I could use to kill the fungus.

  8. Chris Mest Says:

Many people seem to have the same thing. I posted some photos of what I think the problem is. If this is what you have, it does not need to be treated. Please see post number 5.

  9. plant clinic Says:

Plant Clinic has received calls or samples of red felt-like patches on river birch leaves. This is called erinium gall caused by the eriophyid mites (the link Chris posted has a good photo).
Erinium galls are host-specific, meaning this one only affects river birch. Our weekly Plant Health Care Report (May 7, issue #5 @ http://www.mortonarb.org/tree-plant-advice/article/18981/may-7-2010.html) talked about a similar gall on oak. No control is necessary, it will not harm your tree.

I have a walking stick that has 3/4 inch bumps on it. It’s been varnished and dried. Wondering if this is just a kind of bark…or is it a tree fungus? May I email you picture of the stick? I need accurate info as the photo is for a book. Thanks Will wait to hear from you.
