I was very disppointed to hear that there will not be an evening summer concert series this year. We’ve attended several over the last two years. They were fabulous!! It was like having a mini Ravania in our backyard without all the fuss that you go through at the actual Ravania. The Arboretum did a wonderful job of organizing & controlling the traffic pattern. Are there any other supporters out there…..please speak up. I hope that the Arboretum will reconsider for the future.

I agree with Cheryl. Last year I attended two concerts. It was a wonderful experience. I too am disappointed that there will be no summer concerts.
April 11th, 2011 at 4:43 pm
I agree with Cheryl also…I was looking forward to the series this summer and told several friends how wonderful it was…they were so looking forward to it…Please reconsider this decision…Lyle will also be distraught I’m sure.

What a disappointment! I even got my 80-year old father-in-law a new jacket and hat to “show off’ at the concerts. I cannot imagine breaking this news to him
Please reconsider. Raise the ticket price, ask members to volunteer, etc.
April 12th, 2011 at 10:05 pm
I agree…the summer concerts at the Morton Arboretum will be sorely missed! I hope those in charge can find a way to bring the concert series back.
April 13th, 2011 at 4:38 pm
I agree with Cheryl and was surprised to hear the series was cancelled as it was so well attended and surely well run. We will miss it, please reconsider that decision! Carol

I attended my first concert last year – (Lyle Lovett) and had a great time. I was very sad to hear the series has been cancelled. Please consider bringing it back!
April 17th, 2011 at 9:50 pm
I agree with the others. This is the first I’m hearing that the summer concerts have been cancelled. I’ve been checking regularly for the past several weeks for the announcement that the tickets were on sale. Please reconsider-the concerts were the main reason we became members. This is a unique and compelling way to get the word out to generate support for the arboretum.
April 18th, 2011 at 3:19 pm
The summer concerts at the Arboretum have become an annual tradition for so many music fans. I agree with the other members who are hoping that the Arboretum reconsiders and is able to continue the tradition. What a beautiful way to combine music & nature
!

I am so disappointed that the Arboretum will not be having the concert series this summer. I attended three concerts last summer and a couple the summer before. I live a mile away and this is so much closer than traveling an hour to Ravinia. I enjoyed the variety the concerts offered. Please reconsider and offer at least one or two concerts this summer.
April 18th, 2011 at 8:54 pm
This is really disappointing. The concerts last summer were FABULOUS!!! So sad to hear there won’t be any this year.
April 19th, 2011 at 9:05 pm
I work for Harris Bank and volunteered at a concert last year. The turn out was tremendous and the music was great as well. It sounds like alot of people will be sad to see them go. I’ve been to Ravinia and would much rather be at the Arboretum!
April 20th, 2011 at 7:30 pm
we were so happy to find this series, loved the ones we went to, and now are very disappointed they are cancelled.
April 22nd, 2011 at 8:06 am
I, too, was saddened to hear of the concert’s demise. I have volunteered for a concert, as well as been a paying member. The music was wonderful, the atmosphere was perfect, and the people were special. The Arboretum sparkled like a crown jewel on those summer nights. The Morton staff that ran the event should be commended for their efforts.
Please reconsider. I would gladly pay more for a ticket if it meant more concerts.
April 22nd, 2011 at 9:12 am
Rain and all, I attended several concerts last year. I know it must be difficult to reach a break-even point when weather is poor and folks can buy tickets up to the day before. Maybe the Arboretum can offer local musical groups that are not as pricey to book? Would people still come if the headliner was not as well known?
April 22nd, 2011 at 10:58 am
We do appreciate the praise for our summer concerts. However, the Arboretum is taking a break this summer from presenting concerts, as we re-evaluate our options for musical entertainment. Please consider our other offerings this summer: such as Theatre-Hikes, bicycling, hiking, the Nature Unframed art exhibition, and hands-on discovery programs for adults and kids. For upcoming events, please see the calendar on our website or in the Seasons member publication. Again, thank you so much for your enthusiasm and support for the Arboretum.

I have been checking this site for 3 months in anticipation of the Summer Concert line-up. I am sadly disappointed at the decision that has been made. I reside in the Quad Cities and purchsed a membership to the Arboretum specifically to enjoy the unique aesthetic of great music in such a beautiful environment. With friends, I have traveled each summer many times to enjoy the Arboretum for the day and a favorite Artist at night. I just don’t understand the ratioanle in discontinuing something that was so successful. I do hope you realize what a gift you have in this venue and return music to it in 2012.
April 23rd, 2011 at 9:12 pm
Oh, you are breaking my heart!! I was just googling to see if the concert list had been released yet as I too gave been waiting to receive it. This is a really big bummer as I thoroughly enjoyed the Arboreteum concert experience and felt they’d be a highlight of my summer this year. What is the reason for the cancellation? Please reconsider.
April 23rd, 2011 at 9:44 pm
How can you break my sister’s heart like this? She was so excited for the schedule to come out, and now she finds that it is cancelled. Shame on you.
April 27th, 2011 at 10:41 am
I hope that you will continue the concerts next summer. If you are finding that it is not cost effective I hope that you will raise ticket prices if that is what is needed. We have been excited about seeing your concert schedule since the first warm day this year. Your concerts are the highlight of my family’s summer. Please, please, please…
April 27th, 2011 at 10:50 am
Say it “ain’t” so!
We enjoyed several of the concerts last year and were anxiously awaiting word on this summer’s series. As someone else commented, it was like our own mini-Ravinia. I will say that the crowd for the Dan Fogelberg concert was sparse and we thought at the time that it probably cost more to put on that was brought in, though we had a fantastic evening, which was one of several last summer.
It is such a fabulous venue for music under the stars in the western ‘burbs.
Please consider bringing the concert series back in the future.
April 27th, 2011 at 10:54 am
Oops. So distraught was I that I typed the wrong name. Marc Cohen was the performer who had us “walking in Memphis” with our “true companion” last summer.
April 27th, 2011 at 5:25 pm
I could cry…you did such a great job last summer, the Lyle Lovett concert was the highlight of my summer. I was so looking forward to going again this year, so if there is any way to make it happen, I’d like to help. Seriously geeking for some great music, cool people, and of course, the gorgeous surroundings ! Please reconsider !
April 28th, 2011 at 11:39 am
Really? My friend just told me. This has been a tradition for the bast 3 years when the first concert we saw there was cowboy junkies!!! Please Please reconsider this. Raise the prices. This is so nice that it is close by and we don’t have to drive an hour to Ravinia!!
Please bring it back!
Thanks,
April 28th, 2011 at 6:40 pm
We saw the Cowboy Junkies there, too and last summer, Lyle Lovett. They were both great concerts and wonderful evenings at the Arboretum, a whole different way to experience the grounds there..sorry to hear there is not a summer line up, maybe next year??
April 29th, 2011 at 4:15 pm
I just read the very disappointing news that the Arboretum will not be offering the outstanding summer concert series this summer. We Saw Marc Cohn and The Indigo Girls last summer and were looking forward to gathering a group of friends this summer to attend many more concerts in this unique setting. Please reconsider.
April 29th, 2011 at 10:36 pm
We are really disappointed. We went with a group to see Lyle Lovett last year and we were hoping to plan a couple of concerts this year. Please reconsider. It was so well organized and a lot of fun.
April 30th, 2011 at 7:29 am
I’ve been waiting for this summer’s concert schedule and am so disappointed to hear they’ve been discontinued. Tickets were a birthday gift for all three of my children and their spouses and we had a wonderful family evening there. We were looking forward to beautiful summer nights under the stars while listening to great music. Please reconsider reinstating the concerts – raising the prices if necessary. Ravinia is a pain to travel from the southwestern suburbs and not worth the hassle.
May 1st, 2011 at 4:46 pm
What a shame that Morton Arboretum is not planning on a summer concert series! I so looked forward to enjoying them once again. Raise the ticket prices if you need to. PLEASE reconsider–help others to enjoy nature and music! Listen to the feedback. There are hundreds who will be disappointed.
May 7th, 2011 at 9:07 am
I don’t care about the “Official Line.” One of the reasons I join each year is to attend the concerts. The last two years offerings have been amazing. Three years ago were even better. For the Arboretum to even have to think about this only reemphasizes the fact that they are out of touch with their community.
I may have to reconsider renewing my membership.

I am just finding out about the cancellation of the summer concerts. This is sad, sad news. My friends and I have enjoyed these so much. I was just checking to get the line up and got the bad news. What can we as members do to help get these back?
May 8th, 2011 at 9:11 am
OH NO! I was looking for the summer concert line up and found this post. To be able to enjoy music in this wonderful atmosphere is beyond description. I’m truly disappointed.
May 8th, 2011 at 8:37 pm
I don’t understand it either. The management of the Arboretum has been extremely progressive over the past 5 years, why eliminate one of the most popular attractions?
May 9th, 2011 at 2:13 pm
Another dissapointed member!!! I have been checking the website weekly for the concert schedule. My husband and I have attended concerts for the last two years and told all our friends that the Arboretum outclassed Ravinia in atmosphere and accessibility. One of the main reasons we re-activated our membership last year was because we love the concert series. Please re-instate them.
May 10th, 2011 at 5:25 pm
I’ve been waiting for this summer’s concert schedule and am so disappointed to hear they’ve been discontinued.
May 11th, 2011 at 9:02 pm
We made our decision to join the Arborteum after attending the Chris Isaak concert a few summers ago. Since then, we’ve attended two-to-three shows each summer. Although we’ve enjoyed visiting the Arboretum other times to enjoy “the other offerings,” our main reason for maintaining our membership has been the concert series. You have now taken that reason away.
May 15th, 2011 at 8:58 am
The Marc Cohn concert last summer was one of the highlights of the year for me and I planned on joining this year because of the concert and amazing setting – I was also sharing the good news with friends on the southwest side who, no doubt, would have joined me this year.
Please consider adding in the concerts again next year. It beats Ravinia hands down!
May 15th, 2011 at 4:48 pm
It was in the late 1950′s that I visited the Mrrton Arboretum for the first time. A couple of years later at the age of 12, I was selected to play “To the Colors” on my bugle for a flag raising celebrating the opening of one of your new buildings. More recently I have witnessed many excellent improvements during your capital improvement program. Every time you’ve amazed me with tthe to outcome . It was also amazing when you began your outdoor summer concert series 5 years ago. Many of the posts compare you to Ravinia Park, a certain compliment!
It is my hope that you will take this break from concerts to master a plan to outdo yourselves once again. The western suburban area is wanting for and deserves a world class arts venue, why not in a world class museum.
May 21st, 2011 at 8:41 pm
My wife and I were sitting here listening to Lyle Lovett and thought, let’s see who’s playing at the Arboretum this summer. We were shocked and very disappointed. Why? Please explain. It looks like we’re off to Ravinia this year. We live in Wheaton.
May 22nd, 2011 at 7:35 pm
I too am extremely disappointed. We will not be renewing our membership this year, as we cannot support this decision. I am fairly certain the concert series was a good source of revenue for the Arboretum, so whoever made this incredibly bad business decision should probably consider going into the mortgage market. All kidding aside though-shame on you Arboretum Management. Your community is speaking pretty clearly, and you don’t seem to be listening.
May 23rd, 2011 at 11:13 am
I am sorry to find out the concert series was cancelled. We enjoyed Lyle Lovett this past year and were impressed with the organization of getting people into and out of the area for the concerts.
You can be great competition for Ravinia as the hassle of getting to and from Ravinia is beginning to wear on us, but we do keep going there just because they’re there and keep booking the talent.
May 24th, 2011 at 3:47 pm
Hello,
Maybe I missed it, but where does the Arboretum describe why they canceled the outdoor concerts? I don’t get it…it’s way too hard for us in the Western suburbs to get to Ravinia and the Arboretum (and Cantigny) were our only hope for adult outdoor entertainment on a beatiful summer night! Please bring it back!!!
Thanks
May 25th, 2011 at 4:39 pm
We have attended many of the concerts at the Arboretum. It was such a beautiful setting and my husband and i always enjoyed them. We hope they return!
May 27th, 2011 at 2:05 pm
Thank you all for your support of the In Tune with Trees Summer Concerts. We do deeply regret your disappointment. Putting on concerts in an outdoor venue is not a simple task. I’m sure you can appreciate all the complexities involved such as weather, artist availability, logistics and advertising. Last year’s concert series simply did not meet our financial goals. As a non-profit, we owe it to our donors and members to be wise stewards of our resources. Please be assured that we are exploring different business models that can provide both an enriching concert experience while maintaining financial viability.

I have been anxiously awaiting the concert line up for 2011. What a disappointment that there won’t be any!
June 1st, 2011 at 6:05 pm
Where else could you see Blood, Sweat & Tears paired up with 3 Dog Night and a few weeks later see the Von Trapp Singers (as in the Sound of Music)? They were a wonderful way to have a picnic on the grounds while enjoying some FAMILY entertainment. Also, the prices were reasonable – then they tripled in price the following year. We became members just to take advantage of these concerts, relatively close to home. Who wants to go all the way to Ravinia? Sounds like someone in Corporate got greedy – very sad. You’ve lost my family’s support.
June 1st, 2011 at 9:32 pm
I have been checking the website for weeks, suspecting that something was “up” relative to the concerts. As an Arboretum member, I recall getting postcards with the lineup, calling my friends to arrange a group for almost every offering, and running down to buy tickets as soon as they were available.
I am a long-time Lisle resident, I live by the Schulenberg Prairie, and am very proud of the Arboretum and all it has given to our community. The concerts were remarkable…a fun, mellow way to enjoy the beauty of a Summer evening, with friends, in the middle of glorious nature. I do hope the Concerts will be back (unlike Arnold!)
June 3rd, 2011 at 8:45 am
Like all of the above, my family and friends are dissappointed about this news. Like many this was one of the reasons I became a member to begin with. I don’t see how the series could “simply not meet our financial goals.” The concerts I have gone to over the years were all well attended, the staff is mostly volunteer, and the prices have risen steadly. Does that mean the series didn’t make enough profit? Don’t let Morton become another business model.
June 3rd, 2011 at 9:04 am
I’m no expert on all the behind-the-scenes costs and logistics that go in to putting on concerts like this. That said, even though I’m a huge fan of Lyle Lovett and the Indigo Girls, the Arboretum concerts seemed to work better when the ticket prices were much lower, due to booking less-expensive talent. I remember one summer the lineup included Blood, Sweat and Tears/Three Dog Night, the Cowboy Junkies and Buckwheat Zydeco. The crowds were smaller than when the more famous names were on the bill, but I’m curious if the financial numbers were any more favorable under that scenario.
June 3rd, 2011 at 11:34 am
I’m really disappointed there won’t be any summer concerts! I have attended at least one concert each summer for the past several years, and have thoroughly enjoyed them. In fact, I consider them a benefit of my Arboretum membership. I hope you will reconsider this decision for next year.
June 4th, 2011 at 7:16 am
The Arboretum’s concert series were always a lot of fun and very well presented. I’ve been going to these concerts since they started with a small local group held on the lawn of Thorndale, and we had a wonderful evening then. But, as we all know, the economy has affected everyone, including the Arboretum. It continues to provide a wonderful resource for family fun and entertainment in touch with nature. Where else in this area can a person “get lost” in the woods and just enjoy nature at it’s best and feel safe while doing it? And with the changing of the seasons, there’s always something new to discover. I’m sorry to hear that people want to cancel their membership because there are no more concerts. I think at a time like this it is important for us to show our loyalty to such a beautiful place and honor all of those who work and volunteer their so that it will continue to be a destination we want to be a part of. Given time, I’m sure the Arboretum will come up with another wonderful venue for us all to enjoy with family and friends, but let’s not forget the one that is available seven days a week, all year round. Bring your friends….I’m sure they’ll love it.
June 4th, 2011 at 8:39 am
I am just learning that the concert series has been cancelled this year. I agree that this is very disappointing news. My wife and I really enjoyed the beautiful venue, the proximity (unlike Ravinia) to the far Western suburbs and the great lineup of artists. Please reconsider!
June 4th, 2011 at 1:41 pm
I just became a member last fall and was looking forward to the concerts. I do hope there is some way to spread the expense so that the concerts can return.
June 6th, 2011 at 12:49 pm
Add me to the list of disappointed members. It seemed that we had something progressive going on here in the western suburbs that was creating buzz and interest with each passing year. You really should have reached out to your members for opinions, suggestions and perhaps help before you silently canceled such a wonderful program.
June 6th, 2011 at 7:55 pm
Somebody call Lonnie Brooks or Buddy Guy! Bet their management could reverse this decision!
Great venue to see a show…see you next year!
June 11th, 2011 at 12:19 pm
What a disappointment! We so enjoyed the concert(s) we have attented in the past, they were wonderful! Why did this end??
June 15th, 2011 at 11:31 am
My favorite concert ever was plain white t’s at the morton arboretum! Please,
please bring them back…and the series!
June 15th, 2011 at 8:21 pm
Plant a tree and bring back the “MUSIC”.
Let’s build new memories and keep the old close to our hearts.
June 20th, 2011 at 5:40 pm
So Rivinia it is!! Thanks for the Memories!!….
July 4th, 2011 at 8:04 am
I also believe that the summer concert series was a fabulous event. Please bring it back.
August 27th, 2011 at 11:56 am
Went to Ravinia last night. Although we had a wonderful time and would love to go more often, it’s just to far. Please bring back your concert series!!
September 2nd, 2011 at 11:27 am
I’ve read the 60 comments above. Thanks to the Arboretum staff for letting us know what was behind the decision not to have the concerts this year. As you can tell they were sorely missed. I, like many others, joined to attend the concerts. By joining I did learn about the many things the Arboretum has to offer in addition to the concerts. We attended two concerts each summer they were held. There is just something so special about listening to music in such a beautiful setting. We attended Arboretum concerts before ever going to Ravinia. When we got to Ravinia we expected a similar experience to the Arboretum. Not!! We could not see the performers, traffic and parking were horrible and the setting was not as lovely. We decided never to go to Ravinia again since we had the awesome Arboretum concerts in our backyard. Please consider bringing them back next summer!
September 2nd, 2011 at 3:29 pm
My husband and I just loved the concerts! If the Morton Arboretum can find a way,it would be wonderful to bring the concerts back.
Thank you,
Members
September 3rd, 2011 at 10:30 am
We too were disappointed that the summer concerts were gone. We have attended most of them. I think, however, if you mix it up, i.e. one for the older folks (Dr. John, for example), one for the baby boomers and one for the younger adults it would work better.
We go to Cantigny also on Sundays and they seem to get pretty good bands. Maybe something like that would be a break-even.
thank you anyway for giving us a beautiful area to walk thru and bring children. There is nothing else like the Arboretum!
January 20th, 2012 at 12:04 am
I was very disappointed that the summer concert series was gone last year. We travelled in from a good 2 hours away to watch Marc Cohn in 2010. It was one of the greatest concerts I’ve ever been to. Great atmosphere, food, drinks, and music. I truly hope that it comes back in 2012, as our experience there was just awesome!
