Sycamore Tree

My husband and I are planning to put an addition onto our house, and we would have to remove the sycamore tree who’s roots are cracking the foundation. It breaks our hearts to have to do this, since the tree is about 9 ft. in diameter, and probably 80 ft. tall. A forestry expert from the IL. DNR said that this was quite unusual (According to him, a 5ft. tree would be a good size) Does anyone know of any company that would want to buy it? Not sure if transplanting would be an option…

You would want to contact a company with a large tree spade that transplants large trees. The only one I know of locally(Chicagoland) is GRO Horticultural Enterprises(http://www.grohort.net)

Trees get blamed for cracking foundations, sidewalks, etc. What actually happens is that the crack is there first and then the root moves into the crack and as the root grows it expands the crack making it bigger. I know it doesn’t really make any difference to you now but if you want to blame someone you might blame the builder or the settling of the earth for the crack, not the tree.

I am an architect, and am wondering if you had consulted an architect with your addition. Perhaps a creative architect could come up with an imaginative solution whereby you could add to your house while saving your tree.
