Tree Reference in Tolkien and Other Literature

Last winter, walking down by Lake Marmo at sunset, I looked up the hill in the direction of the Millenium Oak. The bare trees were a deep red from the glow of the low winter sun. I recalled that I had read somewhere a reference to blood-red trees or trees red like blood. Was it in Tolkien? Does anyone know of such a reference?
It was followed by an even more glorious sight. The moon rose full over the more distant trees once I’d reached the meadow near the Arborvitae. Yes, it was past closing time, but on the full moon that should be forgiven, and maybe always allowed.
But I still wonder about the reference to blood-red trees.
